Why Is My AC Not Cooling the House?

An AC that runs but won’t cool the house usually comes down to four things: a thermostat set wrong (or with dead batteries), a clogged air filter choking airflow, a dirty or blocked outdoor condenser, or low refrigerant from a leak. Here in the Capital Region, the first three are quick checks you can do yourself before calling a pro.

Start With the Thermostat

Before assuming the worst, check the simplest thing first. A thermostat set to the wrong mode, programmed to the wrong schedule, or fed by dead batteries can leave your system running without actually cooling.

  • Confirm the mode is set to “cool,” not “fan” or “heat.”
  • Lower the setpoint a few degrees and listen for the system to respond.
  • Replace the batteries if your thermostat uses them.
  • Make sure the fan is set to “auto” rather than “on,” which can blow uncooled air between cycles.

If the thermostat is old, miswired, or simply not communicating with the rest of the system, a faulty unit can mimic a much bigger problem. Our team can test and replace it as part of thermostat repair and installation so you know the brains of the system are working correctly.

Check the Air Filter and Airflow

A clogged air filter is one of the most overlooked reasons a home won’t cool. When the filter is packed with dust, airflow drops, the system struggles, and in some cases the indoor coil can even freeze over, choking off cool air entirely.

  • Pull the filter and hold it up to the light. If you can’t see through it, replace it.
  • Change filters every one to three months during cooling season.
  • Make sure supply and return vents aren’t blocked by furniture or rugs.
  • If the indoor coil has iced up, shut the system off and let it thaw before running it again.

In older Capital Region homes, ductwork can also leak conditioned air into attics, basements, or crawlspaces before it ever reaches the rooms you actually live in. That can make a perfectly healthy AC feel weak.

Look at the Outdoor Condenser Unit

The outdoor unit does the hard work of releasing heat from your home. When it can’t breathe, cooling suffers.

  • Clear away grass clippings, leaves, and debris around the unit.
  • Keep at least a couple of feet of open space on all sides.
  • Gently rinse caked dirt off the coil fins with a garden hose.
  • Make sure the unit’s fan is actually spinning when the system calls for cooling.

If the condenser fan won’t run, the unit hums but won’t start, or it trips the breaker, that points to electrical or component failure that should be diagnosed by a professional.

When It’s Refrigerant or a Bigger Repair

If the basics check out and your home still won’t cool, the problem is often low refrigerant from a leak, a failing compressor, or a bad capacitor. These aren’t DIY fixes. Low refrigerant in particular is a sign of a leak that needs to be found and sealed, not just topped off, and handling refrigerant requires proper certification.

Warm air from the vents, weak airflow, short cycling, or ice on the lines all point toward a repair that needs trained eyes. Our licensed technicians handle this every day through professional AC repair, and we can walk you through whether a repair or a full cooling system evaluation makes the most sense for your home and budget.
