How to decide
If your system is under about 10 years old and the fault is a single component — a capacitor, contactor, or fan motor — a repair is usually the right call; see our AC repair page. Replace when the system runs R-22, is past 12–15 years, needs a compressor or coil, or repairs are adding up — ideally before peak summer rather than during a heat wave.
