Basements usually flood during heavy storms, which is the same time the power tends to go out and your main pump quits. A battery backup pump keeps running through an outage, so if you have a finished basement or one that’s taken on water before, it’s worth having a backup in place.
In our Capital Region winters, the buried part of the discharge pipe or its outdoor outlet can freeze solid, which backs water up and can burn out the pump right when you need it. We fix this by re-pitching the line, adding a freeze-relief fitting, or rerouting the discharge so it keeps draining in cold weather.
