Ductless mini-splits for no-ductwork homes, central AC for newer stock, and indoor air quality for Rensselaer's hot, humid summers. Same-day Mon-Fri — call (518) 482-4205.
Local cooling, done right
Cooling Rensselaer’s housing comes down to one question: does the home have ductwork? Most of the city’s pre-1940 rowhouses and two-families — the dense stock along Broadway, near the former Village of Bath, and around Fort Crailo — were built for radiators and steam heat, never for forced air, so there’s nowhere to run central AC ducts without tearing into plaster walls. For those homes, ductless mini-splits are the natural answer: a small outdoor unit and wall-mounted indoor heads give you room-by-room cooling (and supplemental heat) with no ductwork at all.
For Rensselaer’s newer homes — the 1970-1999 stock and the post-2000 builds that make up a meaningful share of the city — central AC is usually the right call, either a new system or a replacement for an aging condenser. Either way, Empire State Plumbing sizes the equipment to the actual home so it cools evenly and pulls humidity out of the air instead of just blasting cold and shutting off.
Hudson Valley summers run hot and humid, and tight, century-old houses trap that moisture. That’s why we often pair a cooling install with indoor air quality and dehumidification — it makes the home more comfortable and helps with the musty-basement problem common in this old riverfront stock. We’ve cooled these homes from our Nassau shop since 2006.

Installed a multi-zone ductless mini-split system in a pre-1940 Broadway rowhouse with no existing ductwork.

Replaced an aging central AC condenser on a 1980s home in the eastern part of the city near the East Greenbush line.

Added a whole-home dehumidification and IAQ upgrade for a homeowner near de Laet's Landing dealing with humid summers and a damp basement.

Got a call from a home near Fort Crailo where the central AC ran nonstop but only pushed lukewarm air. We found the evaporator coil frozen solid from a plugged filter and a weak-running blower, so we thawed the coil, cleaned the blower wheel, and corrected the airflow. The system was holding its set temperature again the same afternoon.
From a quick repair to a full replacement, book online or call. We answer Monday through Friday and dispatch same-day across Rensselaer.

Good to know
Yes. Most of Rensselaer’s pre-1940 rowhouses and two-families were built for radiators, not forced air, so ductless mini-splits are the ideal fit. A small outdoor unit feeds wall-mounted indoor heads for room-by-room cooling — no ducts, no tearing into plaster — and the same system can provide supplemental heat in shoulder seasons.
It depends on whether you already have ductwork. Newer Rensselaer homes (1970s onward) with existing ducts are usually best served by central AC. Older homes without ducts are far better candidates for ductless mini-splits. We’ll look at your layout and recommend what actually cools the home evenly without overspending.
Hot, humid Hudson Valley summers plus tight century-old construction and damp riverfront basements make humidity a real problem in Rensselaer. An oversized or aging AC cools fast but doesn’t run long enough to pull moisture out. Right-sizing the system and adding dehumidification or an IAQ upgrade fixes the clammy feeling and lets you stay comfortable at a higher thermostat setting.
It usually comes down to three things: the age of the unit, the cost of the repair, and how the rest of the system is holding up. Once a system is past about 12 to 15 years and the fix is a major part like the compressor, putting that money toward a newer, more efficient unit often makes more sense than sinking it into an old one. We’ll give you honest numbers on both the repair and the replacement so you can decide — we’re not going to push a new system you don’t need yet.
Yes. During Capital Region heat waves we keep technicians available for same-day and emergency cooling calls across Rensselaer. Call as early in the day as you can and we’ll get someone out to diagnose it. A lot of no-cool calls turn out to be a failed capacitor or a tripped breaker that we can get running again on the same visit.
