Local drain & sewer, done right

Drain & Sewer built for Albany homes

Albany has one of the oldest housing stocks in the country — roughly 43 to 46% of homes predate 1940, and about half were built before 1950. In rowhouse blocks like Center Square, Pine Hills, the Mansion District and Arbor Hill, that means the drain and sewer lines under your floor are usually era-typical cast iron inside the house and clay or Orangeburg laterals running out to the street. After 80-plus years, those materials sag, crack at the joints and lose their shape, and the mature street trees Albany is known for send roots straight into every gap they can find.

That root intrusion is the single most common reason we get called: a line that drains fine for months, then backs up every few weeks as the roots grow back. A drain cable or rooter clears the immediate blockage, but on a pre-war Albany lateral the real answer is a camera inspection to see exactly what the pipe is made of, where it’s broken and whether it can be spot-repaired, lined or needs to be dug. We’ve been pulling permits and working on these lines through the City of Albany since 2006, so we know what’s under these streets before the camera even goes in.

Because Albany sits on a combined sewer system, a slow or partially blocked lateral is more than a nuisance here — when a hard rain or snowmelt surcharges the city mains, a compromised line is the first place water finds its way back into a basement. Clearing the line and confirming it’s sound is the difference between a dry basement and a flooded one come the next storm.

Empire State Plumbing technician running a sewer camera inspection down a drain line into a black iron pipe
Albany

Recurring kitchen-and-basement backup at a 1910s rowhouse in Pine Hills. Camera inspection showed heavy tree-root intrusion at two clay-tile joints about 18 feet out toward the street. We hydro-jetted the roots, cleared the line back to full flow, and gave the owner footage and a repair quote for the two failed joints so they could plan a spot repair instead of digging the whole run.

Underground sewer line inspected by Empire State Plumbing in the Capital Region
Albany

South End single-family that flooded its basement floor drain every time it rained hard. Camera traced it to a collapsed section of Orangeburg lateral that surcharged with the combined sewer. We cleared the line and installed a backwater (check) valve plus a sump pump to keep storm backups out of the basement going forward.

Residential drain and waste piping serviced by Empire State Plumbing in a Capital Region home
Albany

Center Square two-family with a slow main and gurgling drains. Cabled the line to clear the immediate blockage, then ran the camera and found the original cast-iron stack badly scaled and a clay lateral cracked under a mature curbside maple. Replaced the failed interior cast-iron section and scheduled the lateral spot repair as a follow-up.

Drain and sewer pipe work by Empire State Plumbing
Albany

Delaware Avenue single-family where the first-floor toilet and tub backed up together whenever the washer drained. We cabled the main to clear the immediate stoppage, then ran the camera and found a bellied section of PVC about 25 feet out holding standing water and a wad of "flushable" wipes. Since the pipe wasn't cracked, we hydro-jetted it clean, showed the owner the low spot on the monitor, and set them up on a periodic jetting schedule instead of an unnecessary dig.

Good to know

FAQs about drain & sewer in Albany

On Albany’s pre-1940 homes the sewer lateral is usually clay tile or Orangeburg, and the city’s mature street trees send roots into the joints. A cable or rooter clears the blockage, but the roots grow back. We run a camera to find exactly where they’re getting in so you can spot-repair or line that section and stop the cycle, instead of paying to snake it again every month.

Orangeburg is a tar-impregnated fiber pipe used for sewer laterals into the 1970s, and it shows up in Albany homes from that era. It softens and deforms with age, losing its round shape and collapsing inward. If your line keeps clogging and a camera shows an oval, deformed pipe, it’s likely Orangeburg — at that point clearing it is only a stopgap and replacement is the real fix.

Albany’s combined sewer carries stormwater and sewage in the same pipes, so during heavy rain or snowmelt the city mains can surcharge and push water back toward low-lying homes in areas like the South End, the Pastures and Sheridan Hollow. We install backwater (check) valves to block that reverse flow and size up sump systems so storm water has somewhere to go — the two together are how we keep older Albany basements dry.

We put a camera down the line first, because that’s the only honest way to tell the difference. A clog, roots, or a greasy low spot can usually be jetted or cabled with no digging at all. If the camera shows a collapsed, cracked, or offset section, we’ll walk you through the footage and give you the options — a spot dig on just the failed length or a full replacement — so you’re not paying to excavate a pipe that only needed cleaning.

Yes, and it’s cheap insurance on Albany’s older housing stock. A lot of homes here still have clay or cast-iron laterals running under mature street trees, and a bad line can be a five-figure repair the seller’s disclosure won’t mention. We scope the main from the house to the street, hand you the video, and tell you plainly what shape it’s in so you can budget or negotiate before you close.
