Colonie · Same-Day Service · Booking Now
Local drain clearing, rooter and sewer-line camera work for Colonie and Latham homes — same-day appointments Monday through Friday, licensed in the City of Albany since 2006.
Local drain & sewer, done right
The Town of Colonie is older housing than most people realize. About 46% of homes here were built before 1970, and the single largest slice — nearly 20% of the town — went up in the 1950s postwar boom. In hamlets like Latham (median build 1976), Loudonville (median 1964), West Albany, Newtonville and Roessleville, that puts your drain and sewer lines squarely in the era of cast-iron drain-waste-vent stacks inside the house and clay-tile or Orangeburg laterals running out to the street.
After 60 to 75 years, those materials sag, scale, crack at the joints and lose their shape — and the mature trees that line these older Colonie neighborhoods send roots straight into every gap they find. Root intrusion is the most common reason we get drain-and-sewer calls here: a line that drains fine for weeks, then backs up again as the roots grow back. A cable or rooter clears the immediate blockage, but on a 1950s or ’60s Colonie lateral the real answer is a camera inspection to see what the pipe is actually made of, where it’s failing, and whether it can be spot-repaired, lined or needs to be replaced.
We’ve been pulling permits and working these lines across Albany County since 2006, so we know what tends to be under Colonie streets before the camera even goes in. Roughly 97% of developed properties in Colonie are on the Town’s public sanitary sewer (run by the Division of Pure Waters), and about 3% on the rural fringe are still on private septic — we handle both, from the lateral to the system in the yard.

Recurring basement-and-laundry backup at a 1955 ranch in Latham. Camera inspection found heavy tree-root intrusion at two clay-tile joints about 20 feet out toward the curb under a mature maple. We hydro-jetted the roots, cleared the line back to full flow, and handed the owner the footage plus a quote for spot-repairing the two failed joints — so they could fix the cause instead of snaking it every few weeks.

Loudonville home from the early 1960s with a slow main and gurgling floor drain. Cabled the line to clear the immediate blockage, then ran the camera and found the original cast-iron interior stack badly scaled and a clay lateral cracked under the front yard. Replaced the failed interior cast-iron section and scheduled the lateral spot repair as a follow-up.

West Albany single-family that flooded its basement floor drain during a fast March snowmelt. Camera traced it to a collapsed section of Orangeburg lateral that couldn't carry the surcharge. We cleared the line, then installed a backwater (check) valve and an upsized sump-and-backup pump to keep snowmelt and storm water out of the basement going forward.

Newtonville split-level from the mid-1970s whose main line clogged every couple of months, and because the house had no outside cleanout, every clearing meant pulling a toilet just to get access. We located the lateral, installed a two-way cleanout at the foundation, and cleared the line of built-up grease and paper. Now that line can be serviced from the yard in a few minutes instead of tearing a bathroom apart each time.

Good to know
On Colonie’s pre-1970 homes — a lot of the 1950s and ’60s stock in Latham, Loudonville and West Albany — the sewer lateral is usually clay tile or Orangeburg, and the mature street trees send roots into the joints. A cable or rooter clears the blockage, but the roots grow back. We run a camera to find exactly where they’re getting in, so you can spot-repair or line that section and stop the cycle instead of snaking it again every month.
Orangeburg is a tar-impregnated fiber pipe used for sewer laterals into the 1970s, and it shows up in Colonie homes from that era. It softens and deforms with age, losing its round shape and collapsing inward. If your line keeps clogging and a camera shows an oval, deformed pipe, it’s likely Orangeburg — at that point clearing it is only a stopgap, and replacement is the real fix.
Colonie runs its own separate sanitary sewer, so this usually isn’t a city overflow problem — it’s an aging lateral plus the deep full basements common in the 1950s ranch stock, hit by 52 to 60 inches of yearly snow and fast spring thaws. We camera the lateral to confirm it’s sound, install a backwater (check) valve to block reverse flow, and size up a sump-and-backup pump so the water has somewhere to go. Together that’s how we keep older Colonie basements dry.
It depends on what’s actually in the line. Snaking (cabling) punches through a clog fast and is the right call for a one-off blockage or an active backup. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the full pipe wall, so it’s the better choice for years of built-up grease, sludge, or fine roots that keep coming back. We run a camera first when we can, so we jet only when it’s warranted instead of selling you the more expensive service by default.
For an older Colonie home, yes — it’s some of the cheapest insurance you can buy before closing. A lot of houses here still have original clay, cast-iron, or Orangeburg laterals, and a cracked, root-filled, or bellied line isn’t something a walkthrough will ever show you. A 30-minute camera run tells you whether you’re looking at a clear line or a five-figure repair, and you can hand the footage to your agent to negotiate. We’ll give you the recording and an honest read either way.
Across the area
Beyond the Town of Colonie and Latham, we also clear drains and inspect sewer lines in nearby Albany County communities including Loudonville and Menands, in Albany itself, and across the river in Troy.
