Septic drainfield failures and pump-outs for rural Schodack, municipal-sewer backups for Castleton village, and sump pumps plus backwater valves for riverfront flood-overlay basements. Same-day Mon-Fri.
Local drain & sewer, done right
Drain and sewer work in Schodack splits the same way the water supply does. Across the rural majority of the town, there is no public sewer, so homes run on private on-site septic systems regulated by Rensselaer County DOH. That makes septic the headline drain issue here: slow drains and soggy spots in the yard, drainfield and leachfield failures, overdue pump-outs, and damaged septic lines. We diagnose and repair septic systems, clear and inspect failing fields, and where a Castleton or East Greenbush sewer district reaches a property line, we handle septic-to-municipal tie-ins. Anywhere a public sewer doesn’t exist, the home’s waste line has to connect to a county-compliant private system, and we plan that work to DOH standards.
Castleton-on-Hudson is the exception. The village is on municipal sanitary sewer with its own wastewater treatment plant, and its storm system is separated, with five outfalls to the Hudson River. For village homes, the drain and sewer calls look more conventional: main-line backups, root intrusion in old laterals, and clogged or broken pipes in the older housing stock. We camera-inspect, clear, and repair those village sewer lines.
Then there’s the flood reality. Castleton’s riverfront sits in a FEMA Flood Hazard Overlay District, and the 1936 Hudson flood that destroyed the village’s business district is documented history. Low floors and basements near the river take on water, which is why sump pumps, backwater valves, and basement flood-prevention work are a core part of what we do here. A backwater valve keeps the municipal sewer from pushing back into your basement during high water, and a properly sized sump pump keeps groundwater out. Excavated and repaired a failed leachfield at a rural East Schodack home and brought the work up to Rensselaer County DOH standards.

Camera-inspected and cleared root intrusion in an aging sewer lateral at an older Castleton-on-Hudson village home.

Installed a backwater valve and replacement sump pump in a Castleton riverfront basement inside the FEMA Flood Hazard Overlay District.

Hydro-jetted a main sewer line that kept backing up at a Schodack Center home off Route 9, clearing years of grease and hardened scale a cable snake had been skipping over. While we were there we added an outside cleanout at grade so the next service call doesn't mean pulling a toilet to get access.
From a quick repair to a full replacement, book online or call. We answer Monday through Friday and dispatch same-day across Schodack.

Good to know
Those are classic signs of a failing drainfield or an overdue pump-out, and since most of rural Schodack is on private septic regulated by Rensselaer County DOH, it’s the first thing we check. We inspect the tank and field, identify whether you need a pump-out or a repair, and plan any work to county standards.
Only where a sewer district actually reaches your property. The Town has sewer districts via agreements with the Village of Castleton-on-Hudson and the Town of East Greenbush, so a septic-to-municipal tie-in is possible for homes near those lines. Everywhere else, the waste line must connect to a county-compliant private septic system, which we install and repair.
Riverfront Castleton-on-Hudson sits in a FEMA Flood Hazard Overlay District, and basement flooding there is a real, recurring problem. We install properly sized sump pumps to handle groundwater and backwater valves to stop the municipal sewer from backing up into your basement during high water, which together make a big difference in flood-prone village homes.
For a typical household on a standard tank, every three to five years is a reasonable schedule, but it really depends on your tank size and how many people are in the house. When we’re out we can measure the sludge and scum layers and tell you honestly whether it needs pumping now or can wait. Staying ahead of it is a lot cheaper than dealing with a backup or a stressed leachfield.
We’d steer you away from them. The harsh chemicals kill the bacteria your septic tank needs to break down waste, and on older lines they can eat at the pipe itself. For a real clog we’d rather snake or jet it out mechanically, which actually clears the blockage instead of just softening the top of it.
