About half of Schenectady’s housing was built in 1939 or earlier, and most of it was heated by steam or hot-water boilers and cast-iron radiators — which means homes in the Stockade, the GE Realty Plot, Bellevue, and Goose Hill were never built with the ductwork a central air system needs. Yes. Most older homes in the Stockade, GE Realty Plot, and Mont Pleasant were heated by boilers and have no ductwork, so a ductless mini-split is the way to add cooling. One outdoor unit can feed multiple indoor heads, and we size it to your rooms during a free estimate.
It comes down to ductwork. If your home already has forced-air ducts — common in post-1960 houses near Woodlawn and Central Park Estates — central air is usually the better value. If it doesn’t, a mini-split avoids the cost and mess of adding ducts. We’ll look at your home and tell you which makes more sense.

Nine times out of ten it’s one of a few things: low refrigerant from a slow leak, a dirty condenser or evaporator coil choking off airflow, or a weak run capacitor that’s letting the compressor limp along. We check the actual refrigerant charge and airflow before we say a word about replacing anything, because plenty of ‘dead’ systems just need a coil cleaning or a single part. If it does turn out the unit is undersized or worn out, we’ll tell you that plainly and show you what we found.
Once a year, ideally in spring before the first real heat wave. A cooling tune-up means we clean the outdoor coil, check the refrigerant charge, test the capacitor and contactor, and clear the condensate drain so it doesn’t back up and shut the system down mid-July. Catching a tired part in May is a lot cheaper — and a lot less miserable — than losing your AC on the hottest day of the year.
