Local cooling, done right

Cooling built for Nassau homes

Nassau is an old, rural Rensselaer County town — about a third of the homes here were built before 1940 and roughly half predate 1960. Most of that older stock was put up to be heated by oil and propane boilers feeding radiators or baseboard, not by a forced-air furnace, so a lot of houses in the Village of Nassau, East Nassau, and the hamlets like Hoags Corners and Brainard have no ductwork at all. That’s exactly why a ductless mini-split is the right cooling answer for so many homes in town.

For these boiler-and-radiator homes we mount slim indoor heads room by room and run a single line set out to an outdoor condenser — cooling the rooms you actually live in without tearing open plaster to chase ducts that were never there. Newer construction out near Nassau Lake and the forced-air oil and propane homes are a different story: where ductwork and an air handler already exist, we add or replace a matched central AC system on the existing setup.

Whether it’s a multi-zone ductless install for a 1920s farmhouse off Route 20 or a central AC replacement in a 2000s colonial, we size the system to the house and to the muggy Capital Region summers — not to a one-size sticker price.

Ductless mini-split indoor head installed by Empire State Plumbing in a Capital Region home
Nassau

1920s farmhouse off Route 20 in the Village of Nassau, heated by an oil boiler and radiators with no ductwork — installed a multi-zone ductless mini-split with three indoor heads (two upstairs bedrooms plus the main living floor) tied to a single outdoor condenser, so the home finally had real cooling without opening any walls.

Air conditioning condenser installed by Empire State Plumbing
Nassau

Newer colonial out near Nassau Lake with an existing forced-air propane furnace and ductwork — replaced an end-of-life central AC system with a properly sized matched condenser and coil on the existing air handler, then verified cooling across every supply register before leaving.

Outdoor air conditioning condenser serviced by Empire State Plumbing at a Capital Region home
Nassau

Older home in Hoags Corners with a chronically muggy fieldstone basement — added a single-zone ductless head to the finished lower level and paired it with a whole-home dehumidifier to pull down summer humidity in the older masonry foundation.

Empire State Plumbing technician checking an outdoor air conditioning condenser with digital refrigerant gauges
Nassau

Split-level home off Burden Lake Road in East Nassau whose central AC ran fine but blew warm air on the first 90-degree afternoon of the season. We traced it to a failed run capacitor plus a low refrigerant charge from a slow leak at the outdoor unit — replaced the capacitor, sealed and recharged the system, and confirmed a proper temperature split at the supply registers before we left.

FAQs about cooling in Nassau

Yes. Most older homes in the Village of Nassau, East Nassau, and the hamlets were built before 1960 to run on oil or propane boilers feeding radiators or baseboard, so they have no ducts. For those homes a ductless mini-split is the answer — slim indoor heads and a single line set out to an outdoor unit, no walls to tear open. We size the number of zones to the rooms you actually use.

If your home already has a forced-air oil or propane furnace and ductwork — common in newer construction near Nassau Lake and in the more recently built parts of town — we can add or replace a matched central AC system tied to your existing air handler. During the free estimate we check the ductwork and furnace and tell you straight which approach fits your house.

Yes — Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, we prioritize same-day cooling calls across Nassau and Rensselaer County. We’re not an overnight service, but during business hours we move fast on same-day repairs and replacements when the heat hits, and we offer after-hours help when you need it. Call (518) 482-4205 to get on the schedule, with financing available through Acorn Finance.

Once a year is the right rhythm, ideally in spring before the first real stretch of hot weather. A tune-up means we check the refrigerant charge, clean the outdoor coil, and test the capacitor and contactor so nothing’s on the edge of failing on the hottest day of the year. Honestly, most of the no-cooling calls we run in July are things a spring visit would have caught.

A frozen AC almost always comes back to airflow or refrigerant. A dirty filter, a blocked return, or a low charge from a small leak lets the coil get cold enough to ice over, and once it’s iced it stops cooling completely. Shut it off and let it fully thaw, then give us a call — running it frozen can damage the compressor, which is the expensive part to replace.
